"I have had knee problems for as long as I can remember. As a child and teen I was unable to participate in sports or many other physical activities because my knee would slip out of place or I would simply fall down due to loss of balance. I always said I have bad knees and I'm clumsy. I have Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. I have learned to live with my limitations. However I'm now 53 years old and my limitations were becoming unacceptable. My husband is younger than I am and he is very active. I had become so handicapped that I could no longer participate in the things we once enjoyed. Then in June of 2012 I got up during the night and tripped over our dog. I fell onto the hard wood floor with my worst knee bearing the brunt of my weight. After that I was in so much pain that I thought my life was pretty much over. I couldn't enjoy anything in life. I had to save all of my energy for the things that I absolutely had to do such as household chores and cooking. Dr. Schaffer has such an awesome reputation with knees that when I heard about a seminar he was having in Poplar Bluff I knew that was probably my only chance of getting my life back. I was right! After my surgery and physical therapy I am a new person. I am more active now and life has improved far beyond what I thought knee replacement could do. I have lost weight and I have so much more energy. Recently my six-year-old granddaughter said to me "Nani, why don't you still have to sit or lie down all of the time when I'm here?" I felt a pain in my stomach just to know that as young as she is she had noticed that I was no longer cheating her out of the playing and other things that she and I enjoy. That was my main goal when I had the surgery, to play with my grandkids. I'm so glad I had this surgery. Life has improved so much now. Our life has also changed in that we are now raising my husbands 10 year old daughter. I could not have done this a year ago but thankfully I can now. Last weekend we went to Elephant Rock and I was actually able to climb the rocks with a little assistance from my husband. I once was using a walker at times and a cane on the good days. I now walk unassisted. I still have some problems with the other knee but I can deal with it for a while longer. I now know what to expect if I have to have it replaced but for now, life is good. I always recommend Dr. Schaffer and St. Francis for their knee program. Thank you so much!" -- Kelly C.
