Advanced Orthopedic Specialists is celebrating its 80-year anniversary in 2014.
Founded by R.A. Ritter Sr., M.D., grandfather of current Advanced Orthopedic Specialists surgeon R. August Ritter, III, M.D., in 1934, Advanced Orthopedic Specialists, formerly known as Orthopaedic Associates, began as a small group of local doctors treating primarily farm accident injuries, sideswipe elbow injuries and chronic infections, including tuberculosis and polio. As the practice grew, new doctors brought additional training and experience to the region and performed Cape Girardeau’s first spine surgery in 1950, first arthroscopic procedure in the 1970s, first total hip replacement in 1972, first total knee replacement in 1975 and first minimally invasive hip replacement in 2003.
“We have been honored and privileged to provide orthopedic care to patients in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding communities for the past 80 years,” Dr. R. August Ritter, III says. “We look forward to our future as we continue to treat the orthopedic needs of patients throughout our region.”
Now with 9 specialty-trained doctors across all orthopedic specialties, Advanced Orthopedic Specialists has established Cape Girardeau as a major medical center, providing people in the region with the same level of advanced, specialized bone, joint and muscle care they’d find in a large metropolitan area.
