Dr. Schafer has been with Advanced Orthopedic Specialists since 2001. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Schafer completed his bachelor of science degree at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. After that, he went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. From there, Dr. Schafer finished an internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at The Campbell Clinic in Memphis.
In addition to his medical training, Dr. Schafer served as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in the United States Air Force. He initially was ranked as a 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted to Captain in 1993. In 1999, Dr. Schafer was promoted to Major and left the service with that rank.
Dr. Schafer also serves as Chief of Orthopedics at Saint Francis Medical Center; Medical Director for Joint Replacement at Saint Francis Medical Center; Chief of Surgery at Southeast Hospital; and Co-Chairman of the Patient Safety Committee at Southeast Hospital.
In addition to his clinical duties, he serves as a team physician for Southeast Missouri State University and Notre Dame High School.
When he’s not seeing patients or teaching students, Dr. Schafer enjoys spending time with his family, flying, cycling, auto racing and motorcycle riding, and playing soccer.
Dr. Schafer is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is subspecialty board-certified in Sports Medicine.
